A large part of the country was still not fully open to tourism (when we went in 2012) due to an internal insurgency which incidentally Pakistan Army helped Srilanka forces to quell. Despite that, there was so much to see and experience and other than one small incident near Kandy with a Pakistan hating Indian and a similar one at the hotel in Colombo we were extremely warmly welcomed wherever we went. Highly recommend people visit Srilanka because it is probably more affordable than even Thailand and just as beautiful and has a strong history of cultural evolution that needs to be seen and understood.
